Tri-Kids, Inc. was founded by David Dashiell in 2006 as a way to introduce the sport of triathlon to inner-city youths in Atlanta. With the help of volunteer adult mentors, the kids will train for a triathlon in the late-spring or early-summer. Typically, the distances the kids cover at their triathlon is as follows:
Ages 7 – 10: 100 Yard Swim, 3.6 Mile Bike, .5 Mile Run
Ages 11 and Up: 200 Yard Swim, 5.4 Mile Bike, 1 Mile Run
All costs associated with Tri-Kids, Inc. are covered by a corporate sponsorship. None of the kids or families are asked to participate in any of the costs associated with their training or racing. Furthermore, they are not asked to fundraise. Everything from bikes, running shoes, and race apparel to race entry fees, travel expenses, and spending money while in Florida are covered by the corporate sponsorship. The main mission of Tri-Kids is to give kids an opportunity to participate in a triathlon when they otherwise would not have had the opportunity.
The kids range in age from 7 – 12 years old and are all members of the East Atlanta Kids Club. The kids club is a non-profit mentoring and enrichment program for kids who live in or near the neighborhood of East Atlanta. Kids are able to play, relax, learn, create and express themselves under supervision of caring adults. The mission of East Atlanta Kids Club includes building a promising future for the children of East Atlanta. Tri-Kids hopes to contribute in a small way to their mission.
